Where's Your Accent Habit Stuck? | Quick Diagnostic Quiz

Quick Quiz

“Where is my sound stuck?”

Find out what level your accent progress is stuck at, per sound β€” and what exactly to focus on.

Here's the thing: if you don't know exactly where the habit is breaking down, just practicing more won't be as effective as knowing exactly what you need to practice.

This quiz is for a sound you're already working on β€” not for finding a new one.

Step 1 of 4

Can you produce the sound on its own β€” and correctly inside words?

Think about it slowly: can you make the sound by itself when you focus on mouth/tongue position, and say it correctly inside individual words?

Step 2 of 4

Can you say it correctly in full sentences?

This means reading practice or prepared speech β€” sentences you can go slowly through and think about as you speak.

Step 3 of 4

Can you pronounce it correctly, even in specific tricky word combinations?

You've got it in isolation, in words, and in sentences β€” but what about certain words, or certain sound combinations (like right after a particular sound)?

Step 4 of 4

Can you still pronounce it correctly in spontaneous conversation?

Not reading, not prepared β€” just talking naturally, the way you would with a friend or in a meeting. Or does the old, foreign sound come back?

What Level To Focus On

Sound Level

🎯 Target Sound 1οΈβƒ£πŸŸ‘ Word-Level
Where you're at: words in isolation. You're still working on producing the sound correctly on its own and inside individual words β€” that foundation isn't locked in yet, so nothing built on top of it will stick.
  • 1Learn (or re-learn) how to pronounce the sound, and get feedback from a native speaker or coach to confirm you're producing it correctly.
  • 2Practice it in isolation until you can do it consistently β€” not just once, but every time.
  • 3Move into word drills and minimal pairs (e.g. "think / sink", "three / tree") to lock it into words before touching sentences.

What Level To Focus On

Sentence Level

2οΈβƒ£πŸŸ  Sentence-Level
Where you're at: you know how to pronounce the sound in isolated words, but it's not a habit yet at the sentence level.
  • 1Do targeted sentence drills built specifically around the sound β€” slow and deliberate at first. If longer sentences are difficult, start with shorter, simpler ones and gradually increase how complex the sentences are.
  • 2Get feedback, repeat, get feedback again β€” this is a muscle memory issue, so repetition is what closes the gap.

What Level To Focus On

Spontaneous Conversation Level

Where you're at: everything above is mastered, but your subconscious habits from your first language are still trying to take over and hijack your English in real, spontaneous conversation.
  • 1Focus on repetition, not new lessons β€” this is a habit-strength problem, not a knowledge problem.
  • 2Keep a running note of specific words and phrases that still slip in casual speech, and read them in sentences daily.
  • 3Record yourself talking naturally for a minute, listen back, and flag exactly where the sound breaks down. Add these to your running list of words and phrases that you practice.
  • 4Create your own list of sentences using the words, phrases, and patterns where your old accent still creeps back in β€” then practice those sentences with targeted pronunciation exercises daily to strengthen that new habit until it's stronger than the old one.

What Level To Focus On

Pattern Level

3οΈβƒ£πŸŸ£ Transitions + Patterns
Where you're at: you know how to pronounce the sound in isolated words and in sentences, but there are still specific patterns, transitions, or word combinations that trip you up.
  • 1Record yourself speaking naturally and identify exactly which words or combinations trip you up. If you're working with an accent coach, see if they've noticed any. Note: this is usually something I bring up halfway through my private accent coaching program, once I have a better understanding of my client's pronunciation tendencies and patterns.
  • 2Write those specific words/phrases down and drill them daily β€” sticky note, index card, whatever keeps them in front of you.
  • 3Practice the exact transition, pattern or word combinations, not the sound in general (both isolated and in sentences) β€” that's where the fix lives now.

Habit Built

This One's Locked In

What this means: the sound holds up in isolation, in words, in sentences, in spontaneous conversation, and across specific patterns. That's a genuinely built habit β€” not luck, not a good day.

Time to shift your focus. Pick the next sound or aspect that still pulls you back toward your native accent, and start this quiz again for that one. One sound at a time is exactly how this is supposed to work.
